Abstract

Background: The number of people with diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2 always increases every year. The survivors switch to using herbal medicine as a natural and safe treatment. The herbs used cinnamon (cinnamon cassia) which is currently being measured in the market. Purpose: The research aimed to know the effect of regular consumption of cinnamon on blood glucose levels in DM type. Methods: The research used a pre-post experimental study in one group that was given 1-2 g/day of cinnamon for 4 weeks. Samples were taken 10 respondents from Primary Healthcare of Kemiling, Bandar Lampung. Glucose levels was measured by every week using a certified sugar tool. Data analysis used paired t test. Results: The first week of observations, the mean glucose level was 273.3 mg/dl + 69.2 (p 0.050). In subsequent observations, the mean glucose became 260.4 mg/dl + 53.7 (p 0.588), 235.8 mg/dl + 91.0 (p 0.264), and 230.8 mg/dl + 82.0 (p 0.625). Comparing the initial mean of observations with the results of the last study, the p-value was 0.028. Conclusion: There was an effect of regular consumption of cinnamon on the decrease in the mean blood glucose level in type 2 DM patients.
